Pedal Sound

~ Jason Taylor

“I love The Whiskey, it is a very raw overdrive.”

Making music since 1993

Growing up, our mom had a guitar she never had the interest to learn to play. Luckily, our neighbors had a band, which sparked my interest in music. Not just in listening to music, but learning to play.

Once I picked up that guitar, and after dusting it off, I began playing any time I got the chance. The guitar went to school with me and I played during every lunch break. My first job was making guitar amplifiers for Webb Music Center, Inc.

I was also fortunate enough to play music with several bands, including Iris, Here Here and Firelily. Playing for an audience at the Filmore in San Francisco was the culmination of a lot of hard work and a love of all things music.

Decades later, I still have always have a guitar close at hand and take advantage of any time I can to jam. The pedal is the product of a life-long dream to do a project with my brother. Having it involve music makes this project that much sweeter.

Creating the Sound

Coming up with the sound for our pedal took several iterations of the electronics, PCB design, POTS, and more. We wanted a pedal that had a raw and tight sound, that was still clear even when tone and gain were turned way up. The Whiskey has a smoky edge with the sharpness and bite that is true to the alcohol it is named after.

In simpler terms, The Whiskey is a full-bodied distortion pedal with true bypass (no buffer).

Some of the things that give The Whiskey its special sound are:

  • A hybrid of hard and soft clipping
  • A combination of logarithmic and linear potentiometers
  • The custom, hand-made PCB
  • Unique circuit design
